My client is a leading chemical company focused on the development and manufacture of specialty chemicals and performance additives that improve the quality of life for consumers everywhere. The company has one of the broadest product portfolios in the industry and has built up our leading position in specialty chemicals and differentiated performance additives over many years by satisfying the exacting standards of its customers.


Products are used as intelligent ingredients in thousands of everyday items including coatings, plastics, cosmetics, paper, pharmaceuticals, fibers, films, inks, catalysts, concrete, building materials and in water purification.


The company is currently recruiting for an EHSQ & Building Services Manager to join the Operations and Business Services team at Wynyard, and has appointed us to assist with the process.


The EHSQ & Building Services Manager will manage a small internal team of maintenance technicians and external suppliers to ensure proactive delivery of mechanical, electrical and civil works to the site across 100,000 sq.ft of office and laboratory accommodation and be responsible for delivery of EHSS goals to meet the business standards and procedures.

Job responsibilities include:


  • Lead a small team of technicians and external contractors and external experts to deliver building support services (routine and emergency), project work and internal and external infrastructure routines at company HQ office/laboratory facilities at Wynyard and its Laboratory Micronising Facility at a nearby pigment production facility (based on a COMAH site).
  • Create and deliver contracts for services delivered through the maintenance team and external contractors under your control, working to agreed financial targets and ensuring compliance with statutory, site and landlord requirements.
  • Design, estimate and deliver building works, building services and refurbishment projects at Wynyard.
  • Recruit, train and maintain a small workforce with a deep understanding and working knowledge of the Wynyard Site and the micronising facility assets and be able to conduct and analyse technical investigations
  • Manage tenders and procure contractors
  • Be familiar with SAP Plant Maintenance module for asset management and work planning
  • Ensure that all services and facilities are robust and supported to meet business continuity needs
  • Develop policy, targets and programmes for continual improvement of environmental, health, safety and security performance and define and deliver appropriate training and communications to the site occupants and tenants (forklift truck, fire warden, first aid, COSHH, manual handling training and emergency scenario delivery).  Under these activities, you will be identified as the site EHSS Manager along with the building services role.
  • Deliver and be responsible for security arrangements at Wynyard Site
  • Deliver audit programmes of workplace area inspections for Wynyard Site
  • Define and control all methods and systems for handling waste at Wynyard to ensure that all requirements of the UK Statutory Duty of Care are fulfilled along with the company’s own goals for waste reduction
  • Ensure delivery of occupational health matters as required by legislation such as area and personal monitoring, legionella, asbestos, noise assessment, DSE assessment, dust measurement, fume cupboard testing, LEV
  • Deliver EHSS reporting for the Wynyard facility to corporate functions and external regulatory authorities, as well as guiding Wynyard’s EHS Ambassadors to assist with deliver of the site’s annual improvement plans

Candidate requirements:


  • Educated to graduate level or as a minimum HNC/HND in an engineering discipline such as electrical or mechanical
  • Qualified to NEBOSH Certificate or Diploma level and as a minimum holding the post of Technician Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health or willing to become accredited to IOSH
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the engineering/maintenance area and a deep working knowledge of safe working practices within the chemical industry factory environments, laboratory environments and offices
  • Qualified as an Auditor
  • Knowledge of the principles of risk assessment methodology and experience in assessing the risks for a variety of working situations
  • Able to estimate project costs and project durations against resources and demands
  • Strong supervisory skills
